On my way back from WPB this morning I stopped for some speed-birding at Green Cay Wetlands. I had not been there since it opened, and it's very impressive--a super-sized Wakodahatchee. There's a lot of planting being done, but I hope they leave some of the flats bare, there were scores of shorebirds today (mostly Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs)....
In 40 minutes or less, I saw 27 species, including 6 species of shorebirds (Black-necked Stilt, both Yellowlegs, Killdeer, Least Sandpiper, and a surprising 4 Pectoral Sandpipers), 3 very vocal Limpkins, 4 Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks, plus lots of Mottled Ducks, Blue-winged Teal, Glossy Ibis, and Snowy Egrets. You can tell the wetlands are new--I couldn't find a single Moorhen!
The only downside as compared to Wakodahatchee is that because of the size, birds can be farther out; if there's a lot of shorebirds a scope might come in handy (although not absolutely necessary).
In short, a fine new birding area--I've already started my list...
