We birded different spots around Key Biscayne yesterday. Between rain bands we would spy a few birds before having to retreat to the car during periods of heavy rain. The strong winds were bringing species usually encountered on one of Toe's pelagic trips to us, on land! At several locations around the key we saw Sooty, Bridled, Common and other terns. Shorebirds were braving the winds and seem to be the only other species besides Gulls, Terns and Swallows to be out an about when the winds picked up. At the Crandon Marina we parked next to a small building that shielded us from the winds. The field was flooded so we kept an eye on it just in case birds would come visit. We visited the marina several times and on our last visit we got lucky.
54 PECTORAL SANDPIPER and 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER flew in and made the soaking all worth it.
Species seen thought the day:
Double-crested Cormorant
Brown Pelican
Laughing Gull
Great Blue Heron (Blue form)
Great Egret
Tricolored Heron
White Ibis
Black Vulture
1 Spotted Sandpiper
54 Pectoral Sandpiper
Specie Comments: Flew in as the wind and rain got real heavy. We took shelter under on of the covered picnic tables.
2 Buff-breasted Sandpiper
Specie Comments: Flew in with the Pectoral Sandpipers. Both juvenile birds, buffy chest, small head, straight bill, buffy overall in contrast to Pectorals.
3 Sooty Tern
1 Bridled Tern
3 Black Tern
2 Common Tern
6 Royal Tern
3 Sandwich Tern
Rock Pigeon
Belted Kingfisher
Barn Swallow
7 Common Grackle (Purple)
Nature is Awesome
