Hi,
I am a visiting birder from Arizona. I just wanted to report that I chased the Ani's at the Ft. Lauderdale airport and they are still there - two adult smooth-billed and the groove-billed. I arrived at 6:00 AM and searched up and down the entire hedgerow for 2 hours to no avail. Finally as I was pretty much giving up and heading back to the car I looked up to see three anis perched on the chain link fence above the hedgerow. I had beautiful scope looks at all three birds.
Directions: Exit 95 at Griffin and go east. Take left at second stop light into Greenbelt Park. Road curves to the west into parking lot. Walk N from parking lot toward airport. Walk E along the E-W berm that parallels the airport perimeter road, scaninng the hedgerow across the street in the airport. I found the anis between the parking lot and marker 410. I have seen other reports as far as marker 440. The anis breifly dropped behind the hedgerow and became invisible. They are also reported to fly across Griffin into the neighborhood but as far as I know, no one knows where they go. I think I probably got there too early since anis are kind of cold blooded and like to warm up in the sun. My observations suggest after 8:00 AM is best but of course YMMV. In any event if I had gotten there at 8:00 AM, I would have seen them within 5 minutes. However, my experience suggests some persistence may be necessary.
Thanks to everyone on this list for directions and info to a long sought life bird (groove-billed) that has been an embarassing miss for me for many years. This was 689 for me and I never thought I would see it in Fl but I will take them where I can get them!
