Sandhill Crane in suburban Lake Worth

Following a friend through the gates of his complex for Sunday brunch, spotted an adult Sandhill Crane and I beleive one immature as we sped along, on grassy slope of canal off of Lantana Road near old landfill by Turnpike. Only had a brief look in traffic and gone when I returned in an hour. Would immature still have plumage at this time of year? And how common in this part of state? Only been down a year and getting my bearings, former Connecticut birder here.
