I have never seen true Fireflies (Lampyrid beetles) in Miami, though they are pretty common in most of the rest of the South. What you saw might be bioluminescent Lampyrid beetles (Pyrophorus sp.), but that's doubtful, since they rarely are active down here outside of late April and May.
Among Lampyrids, research entomologist Ted MacRae recently reported finding larvae of the Florida Intertidal Firefly, Micronapsis floridana, in Pinellas County, and there might also be some on the Atlantic coast. These would be restricted to coastal habitats, though, as the name implies.
If you could photograph a specimen, I would sure like to see it.
