The bird that Larry so beautifully photographed was on the FOS Records Committee's agenda this past Saturday in Gainesville. We saw other photographs, including one by Toe. Because the species is known to be popular in the pet trade in Miami, we unanimously agreed that the origin of the Matheson Hammock male was uncertain, but likely to have been a refugee from captivity. Still, it should be enjoyed just as much as if were known to be a natural vagrant. The bird in your 'back yard' offers the opportunity to see a free-living bird (now) in a Miami setting where you can appreciate its behavior unfettered by a cage.
