BAIRD'S SANDPIPER in Key Biscayne on the flat behind the Diver's Paradise west of Crandon Marina, late Sunday 8/19. Yesterday while driving home from banding and work we decided to take advantage of the tail end of low tide, so we checked out the flat. The Baird's Sandpiper was a total surprise!  There were only a few peeps on the flat when we arrived, something spooked them a soon as we spied them. One single bird stayed behind, we followed the peeps that took flight and determined they were Sanderling. As we looked back to the flat we see the solo peep among the gulls, with the tide taking back the flat and space becoming tight, the little guy flew. We followed this peep as it flew to the other side of the flat where it met up with some Willet and a Lesser Yellowlegs.  Now we had the low sun to our backs.  With this light we noticed the peep was WAY special, a Baird's!  KB comes through once again, a nice way to end the long day :)  It pays to be consistent, we bird this flat nearly everyday, but today was our extra lucky day.

Roseate Spoonbill, Reddish Egret, Little Blue Heron, Western Willet, Lesser Yellowlegs, Sanderling, Laughing Gulls and White Ibis were also present on the flat. We banded earlier in the day and netted a few migrants (OVEN, NOWA, PRAW, BGGN & a resident COGD) a Kentucky Warbler was around but was never banded.

Nature is Awesome
