This afternoon at 5 PM an adult light-morph Short-tailed Hawk circled over the main intersection on Key Biscayne. I had my binoculars and got a good look while stopped. Though not truly rare this time of year, it certainly was unexpected.

Shorebird numbers are gradually picking up on Crandon Beach and Virginia Key. There have been 60-80 Lesser Black-backed Gulls on Crandon Beach this week, with a few young Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls mixed in. There are 5 continuing Piping Plovers, including 2 banded birds that Rangel Diaz found. One bird is a Great Lakes female and the other bird was banded along the Platte River in Nebraska. Rocky, a Great Lakes male, successfully raised 2 chicks in MI this summer, so we hope he returns to Crandon for his 6th winter. A Roseate Spoonbill was on Virginia Key this afternoon.
