This afternoon between 1:45 and 2:45 PM we had a Smooth-billed Ani. Yesterday we actually looked for Ani at Virginia Key without success.

Today we started out at C111 and the Annex. Then we went along SW 217th Ave and explored side roads off it.

We had White-tailed Kite, Short-tailed Hawk, Shiny Cowbird and White-winged Doves. With this we were quite happy for a July birding day.

As we drove along SW 320th St I suddenly thought I saw an Ani on a fence pole on the right (north) side next to Grackles, Cowbirds and House Sparrows. As I stopped the car all birds took off.

The bird in question flew over to the west into a bush line along SW 219th Ave. After a few minutes scanning with the scope I found the Ani.

We drove over to SW 219th Ave and got great looks at the Ani on the right (east) side of the road just opposite of the farm. The bird called twice in between.

Over the next 30 minutes the bird moved further north and then flew west into the nursery field. It was last seen approx. at the row with the number 24 of the nursery field in the area of the plants with the red blossoms. This is west of SW 219th Ave.

After many many attempts finally this lifer for my Jutta on a day and area we didn't even look for it.

If you are interested, she got photo which we could post on Monday after our return to Orlando.

By the way we had at least 3 male Shiny Cowbirds along SW 324th and 320th St.

The Hawk and Kite had been along C-111.

Reinhard
