Hi folks,

Sorry for the delay in reporting. My wife and I spent 2/11 to 2/20/05 for our first trip to Florida. Birds that might be of interest to locals include:

Greater Flamingos
Short-tailed Hawk (Everglades NP--a juv light morph at Anhinga Trail on 2/16 and a juv dark morph circling low over the road ~10 mi from Flamingo 2/18)
Lesser Black-backed Gull
Smooth-billed Ani
Grove-billed Ani
Red-whiskered Bulbul
16 species of warblers, including Magnolia, Cape May, Black-throated Green, Worm-eating
Western Spindalis

The flamingos were barely visible from the breezeway/deck at the Flamingo VC on 2/16, then seen better, but still distant on 2/18 from the end of Snake Bight Trail--vigorous mosquitoes!

An adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, a few Great Black-backed Gulls, and a good assortment of plovers were on the beach at Crandon County Park on Key Biscayne on 2/19.

We got a good picture of the Grove-billed Ani on 2/20 just before we flew out of Ft Lauderdale.

We failed to find Spot-breasted Oriole, but did find two Red-whiskered Bulbuls at the native planting at the school in Kendall mentioned on the Web site.

The Magnolia Warbler was on the nature trail at A.D. Barnes Park (looking for SB Oriole) in Kendall/Miami(?) on 2/20. The Cape May was at the Flamingo Marina parking lot in the trees on 2/18. There were two American crocodiles behind the marina too. The Black-throated Green was at Indigenous Park, Key West. The Worm-eating Warbler was on the Gumbo Limbo Trail 50 feet or so (east, I think) from the mowed firebreak.

The Western Spindalis was first found near the previously described pond, and we followed it around quite a bit on 2/17. For out of town folks, Indigenous Park is at the corner of Atlantic and White St, Key West. Lots of birds there.

It was a great trip, and we'll have to come back for spring! We missed the Swallow-tailed Kites, among other things.

I've attempted to attach a link with photos. The Grove-billed Ani photo might be of interest. Let me know if there is any trouble opening it.

Best,

Chris Conard
