a long shot question

I was out on Alligator Alley yesterday close to the south/east side for about 2 1/2 hrs. and was photographing nesting woodstorks. Was also seeing alot of the normal herons and egrets. About 4:30 these different birds appeared. Flying very fast like kingfishers. Tried to focus on them but they were very fast diving in the reeds. They reminded me of kingfishers but they seemed to be in a flock and kingfishers are usually alone right? They were grey. Does anybody have a clue.
