Today, Pete Pullido and I found a brown-crested at the entrance to Gumbo Limbo trail at around 7:30 am. The bird was in the clear moving in the outer branches of the edge trees. We later relocated the bird at the small pond on the trail. There is a great-creasted in the area, and we had a great opportunity to compare both birds with the brown-crested at the pond in front of us and the great-crested behind us in the hammock.
Other birds of interest include:
4 lesser nighthawks on research road and 1 at Royal Palm parking lot.
A whip-poor-will at Royal Palm and it was calling! "whip-poor-will, whip-poor-will" love that call!
A barn owl on the road near the missile site.
Great-horned and Barred owls heard from Royal Palm.
Blue grosbeak and blue-headed vireo at Royal Palm behind the building, and cedar waxwings in the big fig tree. Only one short-tailed hawk.
Cave swallows and a chipping sparrow by research road.
Nuthatches, bluebirds and pine warblers near the Boy Scout camp, along with lots of downy woodpeckers and flickers. Also saw another great-crested flycathcer in this area.
Only disappointed of the morning was the no-show by the king rails. Oh well, if they were easy, we wouldn't appreciate them at much when we do see them. I'm not complaining. Good birding to all.
