Young Barn Owl

Couple of days ago, the Jays, Mockers, and Grackles were screaming at my young Barn Owl, which was flapping & trying to perch in a tree in the front yard. The owl came from a owl box I have anchored to a tree. I think the owl left the nest too young or something happened to the parents, as the bird was having trouble flying and was being mobbed by other birds. As I went for the camera, it flew to the ground, by the road in front of the house. I tried to re-direct it back over my fence and into the yard. No way! It flew down the road about 30 feet & landed in the middle of the street.
This didn't look good, so I took off my shirt, covered its head & grabbed it by the legs & took it to the house. I noticed it was very light & bony, probably from not eating enough. Maybe the recent heavy rains we've had kept food from being caught. After feeding it a few pieces of lean steak, it perked up and started looking a lot better. I called Wildlife Rescue & they came out and took it to their facility where they feed it small mammals (better than steak), and also teach it to catch its own prey.

I took a picture of this owl about a month and a half ago & posted them to the birdboard. You can see they start out ugly & get better looking with age. I hope they teach it "street-smarts", like stay off of the roads!
