Yesterday while doing Roseate Spoonbill research in FL Bay we (Audubon Spoonbill Crew) saw 40 Flamingos feeding and loafing between Palm Key and Buoy Key. This is basically due south of Snake Bight. The birds were almost certainly too far from the boardwalk to be visible from there, but they were easily viewable from a boat in Tin Can Channel. They were in deep water so bands would not have been visable. These birds have been hanging around in that area for a few days now. The most interesting thing is that another member of the Audubon Crew was fishing last weekend and saw a flock of about 50 flying south from there toward the middle keys. He said they flew out of sight to the south. This would take them toward Lake Edna on Grassy Key, where one turned up in Fall 02. I guess this would also take them toward a lot of other places, including Cuba. It would have been nice to be in a plane to see how far they went. The ponds on Boca Chica Key (accessed off Big Coppitt) might also be worth checking as they've turned up there in recent years as well.
