A solitary dark-phase Short-tailed Hawk had eben hanging around, often seen hunting, over hte nature trail at Long Key State Park in January and February. I saw it there again on March 4th. Good waders can be seen from the trails boardwalk and shoreline as well.
I don't usually hear or see Mangrove Cuckoos in Key Largo before early April, but I also don't usually look too hard. They become pretty conspicuous here at Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park about the same time as the Black-whiskered Vireos, Gray Kingbirds and Great Crested Flycatchers.
Check with park biologist at Pennekamp for updates from the more diligent birding tourists who fill me in as they pass through the park.
