A morning's birding produced good birding, if nothing spectacular. Arriving at 0530, no owls or Whip-poor-wills could be seen or heard at all. There was a single Lesser Nighthawk on Research Rd. At dawn, I heard a probable Barn Owl at Royal Palm.
I had 8 warblers at Royal Palm, including Orange-crowned, as well as 2 Short-tailed Hawks (light phase), the second only 50-75' overhead as it came over the ficus tree near the entrance to Gumbo Limbo Trail. Also seen were Blue-headed and white-eyed Vireos, and the usual waders. I dipped on American Bittern, however A Least bittern was calling early.
At the T to turn onto Research Road proper, a Broad-winged Hawk sailed over several times (and put in another appearance when I returned at 1100 after running into Paul B. & Juan). Most unusual was a White-crowned Pigeon perched in the woods there! Another Blue-headed Vireo also appeared.
The pineland trail produced Brown-headed Nuthatch, Eastern Bluebird, and lots of Pine Warblers.
Finally, there was a Cave Swallow among the Tree Swallows as i left the park.
To round out a "Solitary" weekend, a Blue-headed Vireo was in my yard Sunday morning, Yard Lifer #104!
