I was at ENP on Jan. 29. I did not make it all the way to Flamingo since I stopped at 11:30, but the TAS walk stayed out all day (see post ENP bird walk Jan. 29). I started at 4:45 am and had about a dozen nighthawks and four whip-o-wills on research road. Got good looks in my headlights if I drove slow and "snuck up" on the birds. Also had screech owls at the turn past the research center, and a great horned at the missile site. Had another screech and a barn at royal palm parking lot. All this was at night, way before dawn. At sunrise, I had two king rails at the Anhinga boardwalk in the gator trails through the marsh. They came to within 10 feet of the boardwalk. Some of the TAS walk folks went back later that evening and saw all the same birds. During the walk, we did see the white-tailed kites about a mile and a half after turning south on research road past the center, almost getting to where it turns toward the missile site. There were ST hawks everywhere, and I've continued to see them in other places this week. We saw a brown-crested flycatcher by gate 2 on research road. I had seen one earlier this year in Long Pine Key campground, around the hammock and in the nearby pines, and saw another this past weekend at Matheson Hammock, so keep a look out for these.

About the Anis at the airport, I was there this morning. See L. Manfredi's post for yesterday. He saw a groove-billed along with the smooth-billed. They were there this morning again. I parked in the greenway and walked the path and the birds were at first feeding in a tree. They then flew down towards perimeter road and gave great looks while sitting on the fence. Both g-billed and s-billed where side-by-side, making identification easy. I stood next to the nearby fence on this side of the road and nobody bothered me. If you drive the road and stop the cops will chase you away. Look for a sign on the opposite fence that reeds H410. This is where I last saw the anis. Hope this helps.
