The groove-billed ani, discovered by Larry Manfredi yesterday, was seen today between 9 AM and 9:30 at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. From the Griffin Road exit of I-95 go east about ½ mile to a park between Griffin and the Airport s Perimeter Road. Look for a stainless steel sculpture marking the park. Park in the lot and walk about 100 yards east, watching the chain link fence surrounding the airport. The bird was seen in the vicinity of a small sign on the fence reading H-410. It was in the company of three smooth-billed anis. The group spent time in the park itself, eating flowers of a nearby Hong Kong Orchid Tree (Bauhinia), then flying to the airport, where it foraged in the grass behind the airport hedge, with birds occasionally mounting the fence for good views. A magnolia warbler was also seen in the Bauhinia.
The groove-bill is noticeably smaller and slimmer than the smooth-bills. It lacks the hump on the culmen of the bill, and the curve of the crown continues in a single arc along the top of the bill. When the bird turns it s head just right, the grooves are visible.
Thanks, Toe, for yelling so loud when you located the bird.

Miami
