The TAS sponsored Long Key Natural Area (formerly known as Flamingo ESL) field trip held on Saturday, February 5, 2005, was attended by 10 birders. A Black-crowned Night Heron was spotted in the rookery near the main gate. Two Great-horned Owls have returned to the oak forest adjacent to the parking lot. The park located at 3501 S.W. 130th Ave. in Davie, will be closed until the new visitor's center is completed around the fall of 2006. Groups can contact the Broward County Environmental Section at (954) 357-8100 for information regarding access.

Glossy Ibis, Mottled Duck, Broad-winged and Red-tailed Hawk, Purple Martin, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Monk Parakeet, Pileated and Downy Woodpeckers, Eastern Phoebe, Carolina Wren (heard), American Robin, Cedar Waxwings, White-eyed and Blue-headed Vireos, seven warbler species including Palm, Prairie, Northen Parula, Yellow-rumped, Black and White, Common Yellowthroat and a spectacular male Black-throated Green along with Indigo and Painted Buntings were some of the highlights.

Among the species seen at the SW Regional Library Stormwater Mitigation Pond in Pembroke Pines were Bald Eagle, Sora, Purple Swamphen, Lesser Yellowlegs, Monk Parakeet, Belted Kingfisher, White-winged Dove, along with Tree and Rough-winged Swallows.

A total of 65 species were seen. On behalf of TAS, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Patricia Howell and Gretel Mccausland, Broward County Parks and Recreation Natural Areas Specialists, for giving us access to the county's Long Key Natural Area. Life is good.........birding in our sister county.
