I wish I had known this. About 3 1/2 weeks ago, a Cave Swallow of the Mexican race slammed against one of the third floor windows of the OE building in FIU (the end of the hallway is open to the outside with large windows facing to the center of the building). It was twilight but this section is well lighted. The swallow was not out cold but seemed dazed and confused and every time I tried to get close, it would fly against the window. I called one of my co-workers who was there at the time so he could help me direct the bird into the open without harming it. Before doing so, we took long good looks at the bird as it clung to the wall under one of the hall lights. With Sibley's at our side, we had no problem identifying it as a Cave Swallow of the Mexican race. Buffy rump with buffy pale throat and dark, rusty forehead patch. We succeeded in directed the bird down the stairs and into the open. I wish I thought Mexican race, just like the Caribbean one was documented here in Florida. I wish I'd had known, since we have a digital camera in our lab.
Cheers,
RJ
