I got a report from a fisherman today that he had seen a female Common Eider in the Keys at Tavernier Creek Bridge. He said he saw it very close and described the size and and shape including the distinctive head and bill shape of an eider. He said he's familiar with them from New York and New Jersey in the winter. He was quite sure. The crazy thing is that he said he saw another down by Key West today! He said that this bird was also a female. Both of the birds were seen from a boat and he didn't think they would have been visible from land. I checked the area of Tavernier Creek and a few miles of the oceanfront this evening by boat and found nothing, but he said he had seen this bird fly off to the north, so maybe it just kept going.

I just wanted to get this out there to get people thinking about these guys, maybe spend some time scoping offshore, or around jettys or piers. If he really did see two in two days, there have got to be more out there.

Good Luck,

Brennan Mulrooney
