There were signs of migration this morning in Cape Florida, including a singing Bell s Vireo. It sang complete song 3 times with intermittent chatter. When it moved into the ficus tree, I got less than satisfying straight-into-the-sun looks. (directions below)
Right on schedule, a mini-wave (10) of Northern Parulas showed up. Buntings are also moving through the park, with 9 along the Pond Trail; 3 male Indigo s (50% breeding plumage), 1 female, 2 Painted and 3 bunting species heard. Birds are also moving out -- no sign today of the Cedar Waxwings and American Goldfinches. On Monday there were 145++ Yellow-rumped Warblers and today I counted 10! Catbird numbers have dropped from 120+ to 70. Other birds of interest: Broad-winged Hawk, White-eyed Vireo (3), Blue-headed Vireo (2), White-crowned Pigeon, Magnolia Warbler and Yellow-breasted Chat.
Vireo spot: Park at No Name Harbor and retrace eastward to the entrance of the Pond Trail (marked with hiking sign). Go over the hill and Pond 1 (more like a wet area, now) will be on the left. The bird was in the privets just past this area, about 25 yards in on east side of path.
