: 20-30 years ago, people thought that Caribbean Coots did stray from the WEst Indies into Florida. But then these yellow-shielded coots started showing up in strange places -- MIchigan (breeding) and California, for instance. Eventually, it was determined that the yellow-topped, bulbous-shielded coots found in the US were not Caribbean Coots, but male American Coots with very small or no reddish callouses at the top of their shields. If you search coot flocks long enough, you'll see one of more of these birds. But they're not Caribbean Coots.
