Not sure if this is old news or not, or if anyone remembers the burrowing owl situation in the shores from a few months ago or not, but it seems that a pair of them have stayed behind and built another burrow across the street and in the grassy area next to the nearby parking lot(where the old greyhound track used to be)and relatively close to the fence bordering NW 2ave . I haven't gotten a very good look at them yet, but I think the pair consists of the adult female and one of the juveniles from the clutch they had before they were so rudely dispersed. The reason I say this is because they appear to have different coloration, with the adult female having much more white in her face, where the juvenile still seems to have a more streaked brownish face, although other wise looking the same as the female. Also, the adult female from before was extremely jumpy when I approached, where the male would let you get within a few feet of him. Both of these owls are very jumpy, although I was able to get within 15-20 feet of them after approaching very slowly and in increments, and never making eye contact. However, it is very easy to get access to these guys and observe them, since the gates are only locked from late night to pre-dawn morning, and security is aware that I always watch them.
Unfortunately, I have no idea when they will construct/pave the area they have made this new burrow in, but it is inevitable that they will, as parking is a major problem for the university. I just hope they will be able to have another successful clutch, and be able to find a better, more secure place for a burrow in the future.
