Sorry for the late post, but I have had little time or energy, due to 16 1/2 hours on the road birding on Saturday, January 1, 2005 and 16 1/2 hours on the road birding on the Coot Bay CBC Sunday, January 2, 2005 and preparation for the first night of school today.

Highlights of the New Year birding, with Kevin Sarsfield and Juan Villamil, were 4 Flamingo's in the east retention pond across the street fromt the Montenay Resource Recovery Plant at 6700 N.W. 97 Avenue in Miami near Doral Country Club and 6 Long-billed Dowitchers in the retention pond north of the main gate to the plant.

The Viera click ponds had a female Common Goldeneye and scads of Bonaparte's Gulls. While scanning the pilings at the Kennedy Point Marina from the parking lot of Kennedy Condominiums south of 50 on US 1 we spotted 2 Greater Black-backed Gulls, and much to our surpise, a Pacific Loon about 200 yard offshore behind the pilings. A Red-throated Loon was reported here earlier and that was our target bird. The Long-tailed Duck was west and north of the drawbridge going into the refuge. We finished with 107 species for the day.

I covered Coot Bay itself by canoe with Jeff Weber on the Coot Bay CBC and our highlights were 2 Prothonotary Warblers, 1 Cuban Yellow Warbler and 2 Caribbean race Cave Swallows mixed in with an estimated 2200 Tree Swallows.

Life is good..........................starting off the birding year with a bang. The celebratory libations included several tasty brews from the Samuel Adams and Michelob winter collections with a few Pilsen Urquels thrown in for good measure. Blood Pressure 120/80. May y'all have a healthy and birdy New Year!

Congratulations to Florida State Champion Miami Hurricanes and Joey and the Pacemakers on his successful surgery!
