Yesterday, fellow Neapolitan Joe Bozzo and I decided to make a run down to the Florida Keys to try for the Antillean Nighthawks and Roseate Terns being reported from the shopping center at mile marker 91 on the Overseas Highway/US Rte. 1 in Tavernier (nighthawks) & the Government Center at Marathon (terns). We were successful on both accounts and also added Cuban Yellow Warbler near the Card Sound Bridge (ridiculously easy -- the bird found us before we were even out of the car!), Black-whiskered Vireo (Carysfort Circle), White-crowned Pigeon (multiple locations throughout Key Largo and especially Islamorada), Magnificent Frigatebird (Islamorada) and other more common species including Common Nighthawks flying with their Antillean cousins at the aforementioned shopping center and Least Terns nesting with the Roseates on the roof of the Government Center. We dipped on Mangrove Cuckoo in North Key Largo. It would have been a life bird for Joe but the Roseate Terns were a lifer for him, so he was happy.
