Andrew Spencer and I made a run for a lot of the exotics found in West Kendall this morning to make sound recordings. We were very successful in finding all the birds very quickly, but many of the birds were not vocalizing (i.e. nesting) as much.
6:00AM: LA Fitness Parking Lot on SW 88th St and 163 Ave, where Common Mynas began to sing at dawn. Probably about as quiet as it gets to get this very urban species.
6:35AM: Dadeland Mall, where about a hundred Yellow-chevroned Parakeets performed well in the small live oaks across the street from the mall proper.
7:05AM: Shibui Restaurant (SW 102nd Ave, SW 72nd St), where a Red-whiskered Bulbul perched briefly on the outer limb of a live oak, before disappearing.
7:35AM: Snapper Creek Cave Swallow Colony, where Snapper Creek Drive intersects SW 72nd St. About a dozen Cave Swallows of the Caribbean race confirmed nesting under the bridge. Also, two White-crowned Pigeons perched up high on the trees within view of the canal. Easy parking.
8:10AM: University of Miami, main campus, where we had two very uncooperative, silent Spot-breasted Orioles and a couple of Yellow-chevroned Parakeets.
Afterwards, we went back to Shibui Restaurant to try again for the bulbuls. There was a minimum of three birds, including a juvenile which was observed eating raspberries and was photographed by Andrew. Matheson Hammock was our last stop, where we observed a couple of Red-masked Parakeets and two nesting pairs of (Common) Hill Mynas on the west side of the park across from Old Cutler Road.
