I started the day at dawn going to Dog Beach at New Pass on Ft. Myers Beach in Lee county. Even though it had just turned light, there were already 4-5 folks with dogs there. I still was able to scope out the shorebirds and waders across the channel on the spit. For the most part, the shorebirds, etc. were the same ones I saw there the other day except that the Whimbrel had been replaced by a Marbled Godwit and there was one additional Wilson's Plover present. I didn't stay long at Dog Beach so I headed down to East Naples, Collier County to Lake Avalon/Sugden Regional Park. When I got to the intersection of US Rte 41 and Airport-Pulling Rd., I saw two Rose-ringed Parakeets fly across the intersection and go onto the Collier County Government Center property. I could not relocate the parakeets but first heard and then saw three House Finches in the "flowering" Live Oaks in the parking lot. Both males were in breeding plumage, one bright red and the other an orange variant. There was also one female present. From there, I went to Sugden Regional Park. On Lake Avalon, there was still a lingering Pied-billed Grebe present. A few Chimney Swifts also flew over. I next went to the paved trail just over the small bridge just after the lake. I was hoping to find a Connecticut Warbler in the remaining wetland/water's edge along the trail. The habitat is "right". I even played my iPod to see if that would help. No love on the COWA.
