In spite of being slammed by wind for the second year in a row, Long Pine Key CBC was great. No real surprises this year, but new for the count was a "flock" of 5 Lesser Nighthawks at the end of Research Road. The Burrowing Owl was at his same spot, pretending to be a rock. Key species like Brown-headed Nuthatch and Eastern Bluebird were seen, but rails were hunkered and not calling. Hole-in-the-Donut is very dry, so few shorebirds and only 1 duck (American Wigeon). The White-tailed Kite was at its usual spot along Research Road, as was the Lincoln's Sparrow. The Paurotis Pond group had 31 Roseate Spoonbills. We had 13 warbler species, including 71 Pine Warblers. There were 92 American Robins, first ones in a couple of years for this count.
Our best wishes go to Dick Cunningham for a smooth and full recovery. Many thanks again to the 17 dedicated birders who helped, as well as profound appreciation for CBC compilers everywhere.
