Eight intrepid birders braved the rain this morning to join me at Matheson Hammock. It rained pretty much the entire time, sometimes with a little thunder.

Most of the birds were saw were along the service road. Highlights included Chimney Swift, Cedar Waxwing, a Pileated Woodpecker that had just it's beak and a little of it head visible at close range, Great Crested Flycatchers, and 4 warbler species (Cape May, BT Blue, Redstart, and Worm-eating).

About half of the group headed back when the rain got heavier. They did not miss anything. Indeed, we ran into two of them when we got back to the road, and they told us they had seen an American Bittern by the pond. Their bird was gone by the time we got there, but we did find a Spotted Sandpiper.
