Sorry for the late post. I was down in the 'glades last week for our annual Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow meeting and had a few hours to check out the old haunts. With my new labmate Ben, in tow, we visited Lucky Hammock, the Annex, and the Royal Palm Visitor Center. On the evening of the 7th along with the regulars, we saw 3 Blue-headed Vireos in the parking lot at Royal Palm VC, as well as a female EVERGLADES SNAIL KITE at the end of the boardwalk overlook (where all the gators hang out). I just got word today that the bird was there again over the weekend, so this might be a reliable location, for a while at least. A Wood Stork circled overhead as well, as we made our way around the boardwalk trail.
The male Vermilion Flycatcher was in its regular place nest to the canal outside the park. We visited Lucky Hammock on the morning of the 8th, but it was pretty quiet besides the regular catbirds and cardinals. Several flocks of GOLDFINCHES flew over during our hour long visit. The annex was much more active with Am. Redstart, Palm, Prairie, N. Parula, Magnolia, and ORANGE CROWNED Warblers, Blue-headed and White-eyed Vireos, and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW. Buntings were heard (sounded like Indigo to me) but none seen. Four Sandhill Cranes and one LIMPKIN flew by as well.
A short trip for sure, but still fun to return "home".
cheers
David
