: Saw the Western Spindalis at Indigneous Park today. Found it by listening for it.

My friend and I are from PA and we also saw the Western Spindalis on 12/5/04 as soon as the gates were opened. We, too, found it by its call after we walked down the wooden ramp at the front - within 2 minutes! While my friend ran to get the 3 birders from NYC who were also looking for it, the bird flew down near the side gate where the woodchip pile is. There it ate some berries from a bush I am not familiar with. The following link is to a webpage with a photo of a fruit cluster and some leaves from the bush: http://www.geocities.com/peacevalleygirl/wesp.food.jpg
The bird may favor this food source and prove helpful to others trying to find it. Sometimes he would call frequently, but other times he was very quiet and very still. We had looked extensively on Saturday but found no trace of him. We are sure it was not there that day. We never heard him call. On Sunday, it couldn't have been easier. Luck and/or perseverance will get results.
