Insects outnumbered birds and birders, combined, by a factor of 1,000. The Love-Bugs were bad enough but the Deer Flies inflict a nasty bite!

The few hardy birders who attended on Wednesday tallied the lowest species count of the season -- only 42. That's pretty poor but actually plays into _Toe's Hypothesis_. While there were hundreds of Cedar Waxwings (over 150 in today's picture-of-the-day), there were zero warblers. Not even a Palm Warbler. Coincidence?

There were a decent number of shore birds in the C-6 impoundment -- Killdeer, Lesser Yellowlegs, Long-billed Dowitcher, Wilson's Snipe (still hanging in), and many Black-necked Stilts (18 at last count).

I got there a half hour earlier than usual -- at around 7:00 am -- but I still missed the fly-out that included a bunch of (unknown number, but more than a few) Snail Kites.

The Pileated/Red-Bellied/Nanday/Starling nest hole in the power pole immediately next to the bus parking area appears to be retaken by the Nandays. Yay Nandays! Boo Starlings!

This was our last walk of the season with leader Fred Test. Thanks very much, Fred, for another great year.

Next week's walk will be the last official walk for the season. Maybe we can do a little better than this week but things are definitely winding down.
