On Sunday, Nov. 28th, Pete Pullido and I spotted a Song Sparrow on Research Road just before it turns east toward the missile site. We were on the way back from the missile site gate (nothing there) when I saw a sparrow-like bird spook on the left (west) side of the road. It perched about 30 feet away and I got good looks with the binocs. It later moved a little further, by which time Pete had his scope ready and we got good looks as it perched for a few minutes. Definitely a Song Sparrow. We didn't see anything else on this segment of road (other than deer), but the area around the scout camp was very productive. Pine and yellow-rumped warblers were in force, with a fair number of bluebirds mixed in. We heard at least 2-3 B-H nuthatches calling, and tracked one down till it paid-off. We had one working the same branch for about 5 minutes and it gave us awesome looks. I love this bird! Also seen were downies, flickers, and sapsuckers, house wren, and G-C flycatchers. We began the morning at the Annex, where we got yellow-breasted chat, Tennessee, yellow-rumped, palm, prairie, common yellowthroat, and a single black-and-white warbler, and some other stuff including a limpkin that flew over us (weird?), ruby-throated hummingbird, and painted bunting. Lucky Hammock was quite, except for a flock of goldfinches and the usual warblers, but we did get grasshopper sparrow on the field to the east and some hawks, and N. roughwinged swallows overhead. We finished the morning at the guard shack, where the thickest concentration of pine, palm, and yellow-rumped was working heavily, along with another bluebird. Not as productive as the week before, but overall a nice half-a-day. Gotta love it! Happy birding.
