This morning, I went in search of migrants today down in the Big Cypress National Preserve. At the "Sky Ponds" near the Everglades Airboat Tours along US Rte 41 aka Tamiami Trail, about a mile west/northwest of the Carnestown junction of SR29 & US Rte 41, several Stilt Sandpipers along with 50 or so Long-billed Dowitchers, a few Least Sandpipers, Black-necked Stilts and Lesser Yellowlegs remain. The Common Mynas were at the Marathon Gas Station at the Carnestown junction of SR29 & US Rte 41. A Northern Flicker was also present. On Dona Dr., I first heard and then saw my FOTS Common Nighthawk of the year. It obligingly perched in a nearby Cabbage Palm to escape the heat of the day I suppose. Other birds present on Dona Dr. were Eastern Meadowlarks, omnipresent Purple Martins, Barn Swallows, American Crows and other expected birds. I stopped at several areas along US Rte 41 in controlled burn areas with fresh-looking grasses and other forbs from where I had Bobolinks last year at this time. No love on the Bobolinks but i did have a nice Eastern Kingbird, many singing Eastern Meadowlarks, Red-winged Blackbirds, a few lingering Palm Warblers and a few Eastern Bluebirds. At Kirby Storter Boardwalk, I saw my FOTS Red-eyed Vireos. Northern Parula, Pine Warbler and Black-and-white Warbler were the only members of that family present. Tufted Titmice, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Great Crested Flycatcher, Carolina Wren and other more expected birds were also present. On the way back home, still in the Big Cypress national Preserve, I saw a Great White heron along the canal on US 41. A Swallow-tailed Kite flew across the highway nearby.
