After a quiet couple of weeks, the front stirred things up a bit. Birds of interest seen today at Cape Florida: Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Western Kingbird, Tree and Cave Swallows, Black-throated Blue (male) and Cape May Warblers, Baltimore Oriole and 32 American Goldfinches.

Usual wintering birds are in place, including Merlin, Sharp-shinned and Broad-winged Hawks, White-crowned Pigeon, Eastern Phoebe, Great Crested Flycatcher, Blue-headed and White-eyed Vireo, Northern Parula, Yellow-rumped, Prairie, Palm Warblers, Ovenbird, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow-breasted Chat and Painted Bunting. A White-throated Sparrow was present last week.

Both light and dark morph Short-tailed Hawks were circling over Crandon Park, offering a great comparison.

On Crandon Beach the usual wintering shorebirds, gulls and terns are in place. Of interest: 28-30 Magnificent Frigatebirds working a bait ball this morning, immature Reddish Egret, (presumed) Short-billed Dowitchers, Dunlin, Wilson's, Black-bellied and Semipalmated Plovers and high count of 42 Piping Plovers, 6 banded. Adult Herring, Great Black-backed and Lesser Black-backed Gulls are present on bridges as well as beach. Caspian and Royal Terns are on the beach and today a Common Tern was seen at eye level from Powell Bridge. The bird still had breeding plumage and was with a possible second bird.
