Dave Klauber asked:

Could someone please tell me where Fairchild Gardens are?

Dave:

Fairchild Tropical Gardens are located at 10901 Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables, FL -- a suburb of Miami. This is next door to Matheson Hammock County Park. Go to the FTG website at:

http://www.ftg.org/index.html and then scroll down to "Visitor Information, driving directions, hotels & maps".

You might want to contact this person to find out if the Smooth-billed Anis are still being seen and where exactly (which "plot" -- map available at the admissions booth):

If you miss the Smooth-billed Anis there, you might try for them at the northeast corner of the intersection of Avocado Dr. (SW 296th St.) and Redland Ave. in Homestead. We had four bedraggled birds there, feeding in fruiting loquat trees on 02/04/02. This has been a traditional location for them, but they had not been seen there in recent weeks to my knowledge. It was good to see that they were hanging on, despite the obvious loss of habitat due to the nearby development which displaced them from their former haunts.

Good birding!
