Alas, I missed the highlight of today's Wednesday walk -- SIX male Snail Kites flew over the Marsh Trail parking lot at around 6:45. TWO females flew over shortly thereafter. I guess I'll be getting up a half hour earlier for the next two weeks.
Our birder count was up this week -- 13 people -- but our bird count was down -- 51 species.
We had all the standard egrets, herons, and gallinules; ducks included Black-bellied Whistling-Duck (with multiple flyovers), Wood and Mottle Ducks, and lingering Blue-winged Teals. Raptors included both Vultures, Northern Harrier, Red-shouldered Hawk, and (during the walk, itself) another Snail Kite (female/immature).
Shore birds (mostly in the C-6 impoundment) included Killdeer, both Yellowlegs, Long-billed Dowitcher, Wilson's Snipe, and a large flock of Black-necked Stilts. Warblers were limited to Palm and Common Yellowthroat. Because our route took us quite a bit further south than in recent walks (in order to get the Snail Kite), we were in sparrow territory and added a small group of Savannahs to our list.
We had beautiful, not-too-hot weather with clear blue skies, a decent list of birds, and a very congenial group of people. So, as another person here on the TASboard is wont to say, Life is Good....
