This morning, I ventured to Northwest Cape Coral in search of my Bird-A-Day. My target bird was Florida Scrub-Jay. Near the vicinity of NW25th Terrace and NW14th Avenue, I found four. Or rather, they found me. The birds are not banded. From what I understand, no one knows the origin of this small colony of Florida Scrub-Jays. There are other colonies to the north in Charlotte County and further eat in Lee County as well. It's a shame that nothing is being done to protect these birds or their habitat as far as I can see. Like the last colony here in Collier County, they, too, will undoubtedly become extirpated IMHO. Other birds present in the same habitat were several Burrowing Owls in the roped-off areas as well as singing Eastern Meadowlarks, Loggerhead Shrikes and other common birds.
