: I flushed a Zenaida Dove this morning in Bill Baggs Cape Florida SP. Michelle Davis found this bird 10/14 in an inaccessible, restricted area. Despite 2 full days of intense searching, the bird was not relocated. It was seen this morning in a public area.
:
: The dove was hidden in vegetation just off the Pond Trail and flew quickly into the hammock. The reddish/brown coloration, square tail with white triangular patches was easily seen. The white trailing edge of secondaries was barely visible as it flushed. Word of caution: This dove is VERY skittish and seems to melt into the hammock vegetation. A Mourning Dove was with it. Due to the hawks in the park, all the doves are wary. There is also a Mourning Dove in the area with a short tail.
:
: Directions: As you enter the park, turn right at the first intersection and park in No Name Harbor lot. Backtrack east along the harbor road ~30 yds and enter the Pond Trail to your right. The sign will say "Nature Trail." The sighting location was ~250 yds south along the trail. I placed a red yarn 40 yds before the location, so you can downshift into "stealth and cunning" mode. Another red yard is at the sighting location. Also, check out the trail and road intersect late in the day -- sometimes doves roost in the Sea Grape thicket.
:
: The park is open 8 AM to sunset and fee is $5 per car. It is reached by taking I-95 to its end and following the signs to Key Biscayne (toll $1). Watch your speed along Rickenbacker Causeway.
:
: Other birds in the same area: Cooper's, Sharp-shinned, Broad-winged Hawks, Merlin, Peregrine, White-crowned Pigeon, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, both buntings, Bobolinks, Northern Waterthrush, Magnolia, Black-throated Blue, Cape May, Tennessee and Hooded Warblers. Usual wintering birds are also in place.
:
: Good luck!

A follow up on getting to the park's harbor parking lot: Please take the right turn after the park's entrance station where you pay your fee. If you take the first right after passing the park's gate (which is about 1000' before the entrance station), you will end up in the park manager's driveway!
