Red-cockaded Woodpeckers have been extirpated from the South Florida Metropolitan area and it's surrounds. The species requires very pristine, expansive pinelands with little to no human disturbance, and are now confined to mostly protected areas that contain this specific habitat. You are surely seeing the more common, adaptable, and widespread Downy Woodpecker or Red-bellied Woodpecker.
