Here at the Deering Estate we are seeing the Great Horned Owl. It's a pair of owls and they have been around for about two weeks now, always perched on the same spot and on the same branch.
Bob if you tell me at around what time of the year Colin saw the owl, I could also check our records and let you know.

:I had a similar report from Colin Hughes about the Great Horned Owls at the Charles Deering Estate last year. They were calling like the birds he had seen in Venezuela(I believe). Colin was amember of the UM Biology Department. I believe he is now at FAU. I will check with him.

: : A Great Horned Owl was seen at Camp Owaissa Bauer at 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 28, 2004. It was perched on top of a dead pine snag in the pine rockland parcel southwest of Timms Hammock (west of the north-south firebreak). It was making a single loud call, unlike any Great Horned Owl that I've ever heard (not the typical series of loud hoots). The park is located at 17001 SW 264 Street but is closed after dark and when groups have reserved the park. For access at night contact me by e-mail and I'll see what I can do (rlhammer@earthlink.net).
