We camped at Long Key State Park from 10/23 to 10/27 and the birding was great! Hundreds of hawks flew over the campground on Monday. Mostly broadwings, but swainsons, coopers, sharp-shinneds, kestrels and some peregrines were spotted. We counted over five hundred in one hour time. Plus bald eagles, short-tailed hawks, scissor-tailed flycatcher, western kingbird, indigo and painted buntings, and warblers - magnolias, parulas, black-throated green, prairies, black & whites, palms, redstarts, ovenbirds, and common yellowthroats. A single rose-breasted grosbeak, great crested flycatcher and two grasshopper sparrows were also found. Also, a huge, fat, five foot red rat snake in a green buttonwood hunting catbirds! A very pleasurable trip!
