Three Lakes WMA Red-cockaded Woodpeckers

Birding at Three Lakes was as expected this morning. Lots of flowers, too and everybody was singing, Bachman's Sparrow, Carolina Wren, Pine Warbler, Eastern Towhee, Eastern Bluebird, House Wren, Brown-headed Nuthatch, Crested Flycatcher, Mockingbird. It was a lovely dawn chorus and not too far away.
Three woodpeckers were fighting for space: Red-bellied, Downy and Red-cockaded. Probably because the red-cockadeds were angry, I finally got to see the red cockade. Now I know why it's so hard to see. It can be hidden instantly. In this video the bird has it when he starts along the branch...it's gone when he gets to the other end.
