It was another good day at STA-5 today with one new species added to the checklist i.e. Broad-winged Hawk, making the total 199 for this site if I'm not mistaken. Although most of the more uncommon winter ducks had gone north, we still managed Fulvous-Whistling Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Mottled Duck, American Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, Ring-necked Duck and Ruddy Duck. Other highlights were the continuing Cassin's Kingbird, Forster's & Caspian Tern, Barn Owl, Bald Eagle, American White Pelican, Peregrine Falcon, Purple Swamphen, American Bittern, Sora, Long-billed Dowitcher, Crested Caracara, Limpkin, Snail Kite and many other birds. I'll let Margaret England provide the details. After the tour, several of us visited "Kingbird Highway" on CR835 at the Deer Fence Canal. We saw a half-dozen each of Western Kingbirds & Scissor-tailed Flycatcher along with the overwintering Gray Kingbird. A flock of 25 or so Cedar Waxwings and a singing Brown Thrasher were also present. A great day to be out birding at STA-5 despite the heat and humidity. Oh, almost forgot, as I was waiting for my ride in front of my condo here in Naples in the predawn light, a Chuck-will's-widow called incessantly . . . .
