Started the early pre-dawn foggy morning with Bob & Carol Schmidt from Washington State & California respectively. At Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary parking lot, we heard calling Chuck-will's Widows. The farm pond on CR846, .9 miles east of Oil Well Grade was too fogged in to find the Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks that are probably still present. On to Bird Rookery Swamp where we saw some nice birds including my Bird-A-Day Black-throated Green Warbler, Swamp Sparrows, Louisiana Waterthrush, Northern Parula, Yellow-throated Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, Palm Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Common Ground-Dove, Downy, Piliated & Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Tree Swallow, Tufted Titmouse, Blue-headed & White-eyed Vireos, Short-tailed Hawk (light morph), Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Eastern Phoebe, American Kestrel, Great Crested Flycatcher and many other more common birds. A "mystery" bird, unidentified had us guessing with names of Bell's Vireo, Tennessee Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler and a few others thrown out. It shall remain a mystery, unfortunately, in need of better looks. Somewhere on CR846, a Crested Caracara flew over the road. Not a bad three hours of birding in Collier County!
