What is it: like some sparrow/bunting/longspur/tanager/crossbill but rather big bird, big dark eye, huge seedeater bill. Male-distinct rose red neck trailing to deep thin vee down white breast. strong large white eye stripe going to a back collar. Another fuzzier stripe down top of brown head. Back had detailed patterns of black/brown/white/grey. Black wings, tail, slight fork in tail.White markings/wingbars on black wings. White covert/legs. Female-no red on neck, cinnamon/white breast. white covert/legs.Bathing and drinking in birdbath, eating in tops of laurel oak. In the company of parulas, great crested flycatcher, vireos, redstarts, black-throated blues and more warblers. Also a pileated w. showed up with the red-bellied. Coopers are picking off two doves a day near feeders, mostly dawn and dusk but can be anytime.
