On Saturday, February 2, 2002, Kevin Sarsfield, Juan Villamil and myself birded Three Lakes and the Disney Wilderness Park southeast of Kissimmee on Lake Russell. The highlight of the day was a flock of Carolina Chickadees at the entrance of Three Lakes (Lake Jackson). This is the farthest south I have seen this species in the State of Florida. Brown-headed Nuthatches were mixed in with them. No luck locating Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers, but 9 Whooping Cranes were seen at Joe Overstreet Road. Eighteen Bald Eagles were another highlight. The Disney Wilderness Park ($2.00 entance fee), operated by the Nature Conservancy is a very worthwhile birding destination. In an hour and ten minutes, we saw 39 species, including Sandhill Crane, Bald Eagle, Hermit Thrush, Chipping Sparrow, Tufted Titmouse, Brown-headed Nuthatch, Yellow-throated Vireo and Blue-headed Vireo. Life is good........
