This morning Margaret England, Dolores(?) Strickland and I ventured to Fisheating Creek WMA on Banana Grove Rd. in Glades County to try for the reported female Vermilion Flycatcher and Say's Phoebe. We were successful on the former but not the latter. The only phoebe seen on the fence surrounding the compound buildings was an Eastern Phoebe. The female Vermilion Flycatcher was originally seen flycatching over the adjacent field near the parking area and then alit on the low wooden-post fence before once again heading out into the fields to flycatch and perch in the nearby oaks. One Grasshopper Sparrow was also seen in out hour or so at this site. Many Northern Rough-winged Swallows were on the utility lines near the compound. Other birds seen in Glades County, predominantly along SR78 were one Scissor-tailed Flycatcher (near the landfill on US27), two Bald Eagles (one adult and one subadult), Crested Caracara, Red-tailed Hawk, Sandhill Crane, American Kestrel, Red-shouldered Hawk and the usual waders, etc. in appropriate habitat. On the way back to Naples, on SR29 south of LaBelle, a Swallow-tailed Kite flew over the road. I also saw 5-6 Wild Turkey on Immokalee Rd. (CR846) at the Twin Eagles Golf Course in Naples. Earlier in the morning, I stopped at the White's feeders on Pearl Street in Alva (Lee County) and watched their feeders for a few minutes. There were multiple Painted & Indigo Buntings, White-winged Doves and several American Goldfinch in transitional colors. The latter was a FOTS for me. Where have they been all winter?
