I am usually off on a TAS or ASE field trip on Saturdays but today I had the day off so joined the Saturday morning walk at Loxahatchee NWR led by Pat Canning and Kristen Murtaugh with help from Bob and Janet Phillips. The Saturday walks are shorter in both duration and distance so they appeal to a slightly different audience than the Wednesday walks.

In addition to the standard waders (sans Green Heron, today) we had a brief glimpse of an American Bittern as it flew into C-3 (LILA Project area) and then most uncooperatively disappeared. The Limpkins were screaming their little heads off.

Ducks included Mottled, Blue- and Green-winged Teals and we flushed a pair of Wood Ducks.

Shorebirds were limited to Killdeer and Wilson's Snipe; warblers to Palm, Yellow-Rump, and Common Yellowthroat; and raptors to Northern Harrier, Red-shouldered Hawk, and American Kestrel.

On the wires along Lee Road we had both Monk and Nanday (Black-hooded) Parakeets. Along one of the levees an eight foot alligator decided he wanted to cross the road right in the middle of our group. What do you say to an alligator crossing directly in front of you? Nothing!

The fog was thick when we started. It bejeweled innumerable spider webs before it slowly burned off (hence today's photo). And the rains held off until we were leaving.
